City Barrel Brewing Company (City Barrel), opening in December in downtown Kansas City, MO is an exciting opportunity for a head brewer.  Two of the three partners have over 15 years combined of brewing industry experience managing sales and logistics, and left their previous breweries to start this business.  Our other partner is a CPA, because you need a numbers guy. 

We will be a 15BBL brewery exclusively focusing on creating extraordinary experiences and brewing hoppy, wild and sour beers selling every drop over our own counter.  If you are interested in playing in a hop-forward world, creating New England-style beers and all realms of hoppiness, this is the place for you. HEAD BREWER

Reports to: Director of Brewery Operations

THE JOB

  • Brew house operations – all responsibilities of wort production, and detailed record keeping in Ekos.

  • Cellar-related operations – all responsibilities for fermentation and conditioning management, including fermenter/brite CIP & sanitation, monitoring fermentation, dry-hopping, yeast management, transferring beers between tanks, monitoring conditioning and detailed record keeping.

  • Packaging operations:  kegging, keg washing, canning, & bottling

  • Work with recipe formulation team to create new innovative beers

  • As needed, represent the company at local events and festivals

  • Train and oversee future brewery employees in various production responsibilities.

  • Perform proper cell management and yeast handling & pitching procedures.

  • Write and manage SOPs for brewery

  • Monitor and report inventories of beer and raw materials, including grain, hops, yeast and chemicals in Ekos and coordinate orders with Director of Brewery Operations.

  • Live every one of City Barrel’s five core values.

THE SKILLS

  • Proven brewery knowledge including chemistry & biology

  • +2 years as a Head Brewer – 4-6 yrs brewing

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Adherence to workplace safety procedures and ability to work in confined spaces and strong knowledge of brewery hazards

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and reach with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, bend, twist

  • Multitasking & time management skills

  • Excellent communication, computer and time management

  • Ekos experience a plus, but not required

  • Self-motivation as well as ability to work efficiently as part of team

  • Ability to lead, manage, motivate and inspire

  • Physical strength, flexibility and stamina required – ability to lift full kegs (+160lbs) and full grain bags (+80lbs).  Going up and down stairs.
