ASSISTANT BREWER
DOWN THE ROAD BEER CO. 

REPORTS TO: Head Brewer

POSITION SUMMARY

Assistant Brewers provide Brewhouse support and will also receive training in the Packaging department and provide support to other Plant Departments as needed. To add to their knowledge base of Brewery Operations, Assistant Brewers will receive basic training in all Plant Operations Operation and upkeep of equipment, and maintaining quality control throughout all aspects of the Brewing and Cellar processes will be a focus for this position. Assistant Brewers will receive and process raw materials, gather & weigh out hops and malts, and otherwise stage brewing ingredients to keep production running smooth and all beers at optimal quality level.

Hours will vary to align with staffing and Production needs. All shifts (day, swing, float, and night shift) will be required as per the regular rotations by Cellars and Brewers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Brewing Department: 

  • Complete brewing process in a safe and efficient manner. This includes, but is not limited to, milling, mashing, and lautering, wort boiling, cooling and transferring to fermenters.
  • Accurate record keeping
  • Maintaining the use of standard operating procedures unless otherwise instructed.
  • Monitor, pitch and evaluate yeast as needed.
  • Work with brewing team to ensure our product meets our standards of the highest quality.
  • Ensure supply of raw materials and other inventory items.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all areas in the brew house.
  • Communicate regularly and efficiently with DTR staff.
  • Arrive to each shift on time with a positive attitude.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Cellar Department:

  • Operate cellar equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Follow SOP’s to meet quality specifications and ensure proper Plant Operations.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Maintain yeast disposal, and grain area cleanup schedule.
  • Perform all tasks in an efficient, safe and productive manner.
  • Report and low levels of inventory to your supervisor when necessary.
  • Monitor gravities, temperatures, and carbonations daily.
  • Be responsible for ensuring that safety procedures are adhered to throughout the building.
  • Communicate regularly and efficiently with DTR staff.
  • Arrive to each shift on time with a positive attitude.
  • Assist other departments when necessary, including but not limited to Receiving, Packaging, Maintenance, and QA/QC/Lab.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Relevant professional experience

  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Have a basic understanding of Ekos, for brewery functions.
  • Ability to multitask and work lucidly in a time sensitive environment
  • Must be able to lift 55 lbs, and push 165 lbs.
  • Must be able to follow PPE protocol and handle dangerous chemicals safely
  • Must be able to bend, lift, reach, and stand on your feet for eight hours
  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills and common sense
  • Refined and educated palate
  • Passion and desire to continuously self assess and improve.
