Fields & Ivy Brewery, located in Lawrence, Kansas will reside in a newly renovated 10,000 square foot building that was formerly a hardware store and lumber yard.  Lawrence is an exceptional college town and craft beer market within three-point range of the Kansas City metro. Our facility has a 130-seat taproom and pizza restaurant with an outdoor recreation area and private parking.

Our professionally engineered brewery features a 20 barrel, steam-fired, 3-vessel brewhouse, malt storage and milling systems, cold storage, a barrel-aging site as well as space for future expansion.  Staff will have access to our rooftop pool and spa.

The Head Brewer is responsible for the brewing operations, including wort production, fermentation, cellaring, and packaging.  The Head Brewer contributes to the public persona of the brewery by participating in beer festivals, tastings, shameless beer-related fun stuff, as well as our trade organizations.  Other duties include but are not limited to:

• Develop new formulations and improve existing formulations within the context of a sensory evaluation program that you will help develop
• Set the brewing schedule and maintain inventories of raw materials and finished beer
• Manage yeast per best practices and industry standards, including pitching, cropping, and monitoring yeast
• Ensure the highest quality and consistency through use of a systematic quality control program
• Ensure product quality in the tap room by helping clean lines, checking CO2, etc.; work closely with tap room staff and provide training about beer knowledge
• Perform equipment maintenance, troubleshooting problems that arise, and repair as needed
• Help maintain and develop standard operating procedures that ensure all aspects of beer production and packaging align with safety, sanitary, and quality protocols while allowing for process improvement and workflow efficiency
• Be an active brewery representative, including attending promotional events and festivals, occasionally participating in tours and other educational and marketing events
• Assist the owner and other team members in developing growth strategies; assist in hiring and training brewery employees; effectively communicate with owners, brewery staff, sales team and others to create a supportive work environment

• 5 plus years professional experience as a production brewer
• Formal brewing training (certificate/diploma) from a recognized and accredited brewing program (Siebel, UC-Davis, etc.) is a plus
• Strong knowledge of brewing techniques, quality control, lab analytics and interpreting the results, yeast management, cleaning and sanitation, cellaring and packaging, and brewery equipment
• Experience in recipe formulation and development; a high degree of curiosity to use new ingredients and flavor combinations
• Knowledge of developing and documenting formalized Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all brewery processes
• Commitment to safety and quality by following industry standards, best practices, and OSHA regulations and requirements
• Strong organization and time management skills and attention to detail; ability to multi-task; flexible schedule which includes nights and weekends as needed
• Ability to work well as a member of a team and also independently
• Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to give and take constructive feedback
• Friendly attitude and willingness to interact with customers in the brewery and at festivals and events
• Strong work ethic and flexibility as the brewery expands
• Must be able to lift up to 55 lbs on a regular basis as well as stand on your feet for up to 8 hours at a time and work in environmental conditions that may include elevated levels of heat and humidity
• Some travel including occasional out of town overnight stays are to be expected
