Primary Role: The Brewer is responsible for supporting Head Brewer with quality, taste and consistency of all the beers we brew. 

Secondary Role: The Cellar Worker is responsible for all aspects of cellar work and filtration of product as specified by Sudwerk’s Standard Operating Procedures.

BREWER RESPONSIBILITIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Responsible for brewing on all Sudwerk Brewhouses according to schedule and standard operating procedures given by the Head Brewer
  • Create and/or maintain written facility policies, beer production standards and standard operating procedures
  • Maintain building and equipment using proper operating, cleaning, and preventive maintenance procedures. All safety hazards to be communicated and addressed in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to market visits by working with sales personnel during beer tastings, wait-staff educations, beer & food pairing dinners and other promotional events
  • Represent the brand at local events when necessary.
  • Assist in new recipe development and recipe changes in coordination with Head Brewer. Document and report any recipe changes to the “Change Log” and communicate said changes to Head Brewer and Operations Manager.
  • Support maintenance of a safe working environment including adhering to OHSA, Fire, and other safety regulation
  • Responsible for Good Manufacturing Practices, brewery housekeeping and sanitation
  • Maintain clear and constant line of communication with Head Brewer and Operations Manager/Business Manager to properly schedule brews, fermentation, cellaring, filtration and packaging.
  • Maintain strong communication with Packaging Manager and Head Brewer to schedule packaging according to demand forecasting
  • Ability to adapt, take initiative and make adjustments to equipment to compensate for variations in materials
  • Participate in taste panel work as directed by Head Brewer and QA/QC coordinator
  • Take direction and report to the Head Brewer
  • Attend and participate constructively at weekly staff meetings
  • Contribute to a positive work environment through open and constructive dialog
  • Contribute and be receptive to continuous improvements in the workplace.
  • Communicate issues and concerns as they arise with staff and management
  • Regularly communicate any issues regarding: mechanical operations, wort/beer quality, and safety to a supervisor and/or Plant Manager
  • Assist in other areas of the brewery as needed
  • Ability and willingness to learn, adapt and regularly use all company communication channels (Gmail, Slack, etc)
  • Ability to follow verbal direction and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Create and/or maintain written facility policies, beer production standards and standard operating procedures
  • Support maintenance of a safe working environment including adhering to OHSA, Fire, and other safety regulation
  • Responsible for Good Manufacturing Practices, brewery housekeeping and sanitation
  • Sudwerk ambassador (at all times, day or night, at work and abroad). Be the brand.
  • Maintain a harmonious team environment with all staff members. Maintain a positive attitude and lead by example

CELLAR TECHNICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Ability to perform all cellar operations as instructed
  • Daily operation of filtration equipment and procedures
  • Startup and shutdown of facility processes
  • Monitoring of quality parameters and working to resolve issues promptly
  • Careful, accurate and timely daily record keeping
  • Careful, accurate and timely monthly inventory tracking/reporting
  • Sample processes and product as required
  • Maintain a clean, organized, orderly and safe work environment in cellar room, filter room, barrel room, as well as entire facility
  • Plate & Frame Filtration operation

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • 1-2 years of experience in a production brewery environment
  • Must be able to work varying hours depending upon production schedule
  • A positive attitude in a demanding repetitive production environment
  • Strong orientation towards quality control and safety
  • Ability to focus and adjust to changing priorities while maintaining a strong attention to detail
  • Good time management skills
  • Strong record keeping skills, attention to detail, and communication skills
  • Strong mechanical skills a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of the brewing process, fermentation, and cellar principles is a plus
  • A full understanding of cleaning and sanitation procedures a plus
  • Data entry and work with computers using Office software and industry specific inventory and tracking software (knowledge of Orchestrated Beer a plus)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to lift 55+ lbs. on a regular basis
  • Heavy physical work (bending, kneeling, climbing into tanks, pulling hoses, climbing ladders, ducking under and around equipment, etc.)
  • Will work continuously on wet floors and with wet equipment
  • Ability to work in hot, cold and noisy environments with loud to moderate continuous noise in work area
  • Work with strong and often times hazardous chemicals
  • Standing for long periods of time (up to 8-10 hours per day)
