Brewbound Portland, ME – Harpoon Brewery, Allagash Brewery, Shipyard Brewery and Gritty McDuff's Brewpub

Brewbound Portland finished about 2 weeks ago. The first thing we have to say is thanks to everyone for coming, we had a blast (hope you did too!). We’d also like to thank all of the breweries for having us and would really like to thank Jeff Rowe for his part in the whole thing.

The following is a recap of the day’s event with photos and videos:

9:00 AM – Brewbound Headquarters

We arrived to our office to pack up our cars full of beers, snacks and music gear. Sure enough the fire alarm was ringing off the hook in our building. We were lucky enough to find no firetrucks putting out a fire. After waiting around for a few minutes we ran in and grabbed all the nessary gear. Sure enough by the time we finished the property manager showed up and told us that the alarm had been going off for the past couple of hours and it was nothing to be alarmed of. Around 9:45 we were all packed up so we headed to the sea port district of Boston to visit Harpoon Brewery. Fire alarms be damned!

11 AM – Harpoon Brewery – Boston, MA

After arriving and unpacking Jeff started playing to a packed house in the Harpoon tasting room. As you can see from the photos the set up was perfect. Jeff played 4 songs across from the taps which allowed for constant tastings while enjoying the first set of the day. The beer highlights were Harpoon’s Leviathan series. It’s almost like every new beer they release is better than the last.

Around 11:40 we started checking the parking lot and sure enough the bus pulled in shortly before noon. We ran out to the bus with a couple big boxes of “necessities”: Paper Towels, Beers, Strange Brew the movie and Travel Bags(we made snack bags full of water/beer/chips and commemorative gift for each attendee). Around noon the bus left Boston and headed to Portland, ME.

2 PM – Allagash Brewery

Allagash is located in the middle of Portland on a small industrial road. Complimentary tours and tastings take place Monday through Friday at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. The tour and tasting lasts approximately 30 minutes. Since it was a Saturday the fine folks at Allagash(Naomi and Sam) came in on their off day to open the doors for us. Jeff set up and played another 4 songs followed by a 20 minute tour of the brewery by Sam. Of course during the whole time there we got to sample multiple Allagash brands such as their Black, White and a few limited engagement offerings.

3 PM – Shipyard Brewing

After Allagash everyone piled back onto the bus and we headed to the waterfront to make our next stop of the day, Shipyard Brewing!

Our visit to Shipyard was a bit different than Allagash, instead of a tour of their facility we watched a 15 minute video on their brewery and history. Little know fact: Did you know that Shipyard bottles a lot more beer than just Shipyard? At their Portland location they also contract brew for Peak Organic, Gritty McDuffs and many more!

After the video we all joined Ben(our Shipyard Captain for the hour) inside the tasting room. Picture a bar hidden inside of a coastal tourist attraction! After sampling Shipyard Export, IPA, Brown Ale and Shipyard Summer everyone headed back to the main hall to watch Jeff play his third set of the day.

Since our visit to Shipyard they are now offering full tours of their brewery on Tuesday nights. These tours must be booked in advance but if their gift shop/tasting bar/hall is just the start then it’s highly suggested that you schedule the full tour!

After visting Shipyard everyone made the walk down the street to a local brewpub for beers, music and some much needed food. Gritty McDuff’s did not disappoint and lead to full bellys for the bus ride home. If you are looking for great pub fare and a wonderful atmosphere in down time Portland then Gritty’s is a spot that you can’t miss.

We would like to thank all four breweries for letting us visit!
