Brewbound Review:
The problem with most craft beer we try isn’t that it’s not ‘full flavored’ or that it’s not drinkable. The problem is that there simply is too much of the same beer in the marketplace. But every once in a while, a beer comes along that makes us want to keep sampling new brew after new brew. A big thank you to Stone Brewing, The Bruery and Elysian for getting together to create a ‘pumpkin beer’ that not only is the most unique 'pumpkin beer' we have tried to date, but also quite possibly the most unique beer we have ever put to our lips. La Citrueille Celeste de Citracado pours a light brown, (almost copper) color with a glowing orange hue and frothy tan head. Immediately on the nose, notes of pumpkin, herbs and sweetness are perceived. A much more subtle spice aroma is also present. The first sip truly ‘wowed’ us. The combination of pumpkin, roasted yams and lemon verbena works in just the right way. No single ingredient is overpowering, but there is still enough unique flavor to separate this beer from all others in the category – in a good way. A creamy mouthfeel and medium body make this beer incredibly quaffable and the finish isn’t dry at all. Overall, we really enjoyed this collaboration. While some might find the taste a bit too sweet, we think it worked well for a “pumpkin” beer. It was a bit difficult to read the story that was screen printed on the back of the bottle – perhaps using white ink all the way through would have been better. Other than that, our only complaint is that we didn’t have more.
