Brewbound Review:

When done properly, there are very few beers that have the appeal of a well-crafted Belgian IPA. Wiledeman is the first of 12 new beers being introduced this year by Flying Dog and if this offering is any indication of how the other 11 will turn out, we can’t wait to sample. It’s a variation of the Farmhouse IPA brewed in 2011 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the legendary Amsterdam taproom, In De Wildeman. It’s also now a permanent part of the brewery’s portfolio, and for good reason. Wiledeman pours a deep orange color with a medium white head. Tropical fruits, a spicy Belgian yeast character and lemony-citrus notes dominate the nose. A faint booze characteristic is also present but barely noticeable for 7.5 percent ABV. If the smell wasn’t enough to get you excited for this beer, the taste will make you say “wow.” What stood out the most was how incredibly well-balanced Wildeman is. No single element dominates the flavor profile. There is a nice spice on the front palette while fruitiness through the middle works in harmony with a Belgian yeast strain that doesn’t overpower. The finish isn’t overly dry, which often times can be problematic for many Belgian IPAs. We really enjoyed Wildeman for its ability to stand alone as just a beer and for its ability to take that homecooked meal to the next level. This beer is truly a welcome addition to the Flying Dog portfolio.
