Brewbound Review:
February has come and that means the return of Monk's Blood! What can we say about this beer other than it is delightful. It pours a deep ruby red/brown color with a minimal amount of head. Smells are easy on this one, with an incredible amount of sweet malts and dried fruits coming through on the nose (probably prune or fig). A word of caution, serving this beer closer to room temperature is best. When it is cold, the high ABV (8.3%) is much more noticeable. However, if you let this beer warm, the flavors round out, the alcohol is much more masked and the drinking experience is all the more enjoyable. This is a great representation of the classic Abbey Ale, or Belgian Dark Strong Ale. The Abbey yeast strain is particularly noticeable and the oak-aging really adds a nice dry finish that completes the beer. This beer is only available for a limited time, so it would be in your best interest to pick up a four-pack ASAP!
