Wynkoop Releases Kurt’s Mile High Malt

Denver, Colorado— First brewed by Wynkoop in 1996, Kurt’s Mile High Malt is based on the recipe of Vonnegut’s brewer grandfather. Straight from the recipe vault, this beer has thus far only been resurrected in honor of Kurt’s passing in 2007 and then again for Wynkoop’s 25th anniversary last year. Beer lovers, history buffs, and Vonnegut enthusiasts can take credit for helping bring the beer back to stay in the normal Wynkoop rotation as the newest addition to the hand-labeled cans of the Even-Smaller Batch series. The beer will be available on draft and in 4-packs at local retailers starting April 20th.

This Vienna-Style lager is brewed with Ethiopian Anyetsu coffee from local roasters Novo Coffee. The malty, sweet, copper-colored brew showcases the balance and nuance of coffee flavor in a clean and drinkable lager at 5.8% abv and 18 IBU.

This beer was originally brewed and bottled for a show at a local gallery featuring the prints of Vonnegut and fellow artist Joe Petro III. As it turns out, the father of Wynkoop founder John Hickenlooper was one of Vonnegut’s fraternity brothers at Cornell. For more on the story behind the Vonnegut-Wynkoop connection, check out the blog at www.wynkoop.com/brewery.

To celebrate the release of the beer, there will be a pre-release event at the Novo coffee Glenarm location (1600 Glenarm Pl, Denver CO 80202) on Friday, April 18th from 5-10pm. Wynkoop BeerCo will be giving out swag with Kurt’s original label artwork while Kurt’s Mile High Malt pours on tap. There will be food from Sully’s Pizza, and a coffee art competition between local baristas. Visit www.novocoffee/news-events for more info.

Wynkoop will celebrate the official release of the beer with a Sunday brunch on 4/20 from 11-4pm with a menu of options all themed after Kurt Vonnegut books, each served with Kurt’s Mile High Malt. Novo will be on-site serving up fresh pour-over coffee from 11-1pm as well. No reservations required. See menu below.
