Widmer Brothers Releases Hefe Shandy

Portland, OR – Widmer Brothers Brewing has released its summer seasonal beer, Hefe Shandy, a tribute to the ritual of adding a lemon to the rim of the brewery’s flagship beer, Hefeweizen (Hefe). Hefe Shandy returns after a successful inaugural year where it became a top 10 craft beer in the state of Oregon last summer according to Nielsen sales data.

Hefe Shandy features Hefe’s signature hazy appearance with the addition of lemon drop hops and natural lemonade flavor. The combination of these ingredients delivers a unique, citrusy version of the original American Hefeweizen, which isn’t as sweet as many other shandies in the market. Widmer Brothers’ primary goal was to make Hefe Shandy taste like a beer first and foremost, and not a cloying fruit drink.

The lemon drop hops used in Hefe Shandy add to the natural lemon profile of the beer, and give it a distinct, bright citrus hop aroma. At 4.2 percent ABV, Hefe Shandy is the perfect session beer for when the summer days heat up.

“We were happy Hefe Shandy was received so well last year and are excited to release it again for the summer of 2016,” said Rob Widmer, co-founder of Widmer Brothers Brewing. “The beer is not only a great complement to our flagship Hefe, which turned 30 this year, but also a refreshing hot weather shandy that actually tastes like a beer.”

About Widmer Brothers Brewing:

Widmer Brothers Brewing helped create the Pacific Northwest craft beer movement in 1984 when founders Kurt and Rob Widmer, then in their 20s, began brewing unique interpretations of traditional German beer styles. In 1986, Widmer Brothers Brewing introduced the original American-style Hefeweizen, which elevated the brewery to national acclaim. Since then, the brewery’s iconic Hefe, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2016, has grown to become Oregon’s favorite craft beer. For more than three decades, Widmer Brothers has continued to push the boundaries of craft beer. Based in Portland, Oregon, the brewery currently brews a variety of beers including Hefe, Upheaval IPA, Steel Bridge Porter, Drop Top Amber, Replay IPA, and a full seasonal lineup. Additionally, the brewery continues to make a series of limited edition, small-batch beers available in Oregon and at the Widmer Brothers Pub in North Portland.
