Silver City Brewery Releases Le Fat: Oak Barrel Aged Belgian Sour Scotch Ale

unnamed

Bremerton, WA — Over the past year, Silver City Brewery has released more sour beers than any year prior. Charming Disarmer, a Peach-infused delicacy; Foxy Lady, a Flanders-style red ale; and Wily Temptress, one pucker-punch of blackberry deliciousness. However, none of these would have come to fruition if it hadn’t been Le Fat- the original Silver City sour beer.

An unexpected conglomeration of vastly different styles, Le Fat has been an annual hit among Silver City fans since its debut in 2010. When tasted for the first time, the mystery is made clear- it’s one hell of balanced beer. The sweetness of the Fat Scotch ale base serves as a brilliant counterbalance to the tart lactic acids generated by the host of bacteria strains that work their magic in spent Cabernet, Merlot, and Malbec barrels over many months. It’s difficult to pin a particular vintage on this beer as the culture is kept thriving from batch-to-batch, year-to-year. We present this release as the 2015 Vintage, as that’s when the slight majority of this fluid entered the barrels.

Tasting Notes:
The color of deep mahogany, dark malts provide a roasty, slightly smokey aroma with a hint of minerality. At first, the massive body of this beer and its oaky richness overcome the palate with a mellow sweetness. Then, tartness. As previously mentioned, the hallmark of this beer is balance. The tartness is present and plum-like- not overbearing as to compete with the malt profile- rather, it stands in complimentary unison. An earthy finish reminiscent of fresh figs lingers momentarily.

Food Pairings:
A very unique ale, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, Le Fat is an occasion that deserves great food. The combination of sweet, sour, and earthy notes make antipasto an obvious choice. Caprese salad with a touch of balsamic, a rustic baguette, and olives are a perfect accompaniment. Cured meats aided by smoked provolone pay tribute to the peaty notes of the base beer.

Official Description:
“Our renowned Fat Scotch Ale gains Belgian influence from a host of micro-organisms that sour the once-sweet ale. Hints of fig, plum, and cherries occur naturally as a result. Over time the beer softens and mellows through extended aging in oak barrels once used for winemaking.”

Le Fat will be available starting today, Thursday, October 6th at Silver City Brewery Taproom on draft and in exceedingly limited 500ml bottles.

Bottles will also be available throughout Washington State in select specialty locations where Silver City beer is sold.
