Shipyard Wins Three Silver Awards at the L.A. International Beer Competition

PORTLAND, Maine — Shipyard Brewing Company’s Pugsley’s Signature Series Smashed Blueberry, Bourbon Barrel Aged Double Scottish Ale, and Old Thumper Extra Special Ale were all honored with silver awards at the 2013 Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition.

This competition is part of the 91st annual Los Angeles County Fair and 647 beers competed in 84 categories. This internationally recognized fair is the largest in North America.

Pugsley’s Signature Series Smashed Blueberry was awarded a silver in the Fruit Beer category. Bourbon Barrel Aged Double Scottish Ale took home a silver in the Scottish-Style Ale category. Old Thumper Extra Special won a silver in the Extra Special Bitter category.

Old Thumper Extra Special Ale was created in 1979 by veteran British brewer, Peter Austin, founder of the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England and mentor to Shipyard’s master brewer, Alan Pugsley. A British Grand Champion beer, Old Thumper is a non-traditional English Bitter brewed in the United States solely by Shipyard.

Pugsley’s Signature Series Smashed Blueberry is a hybrid between a Porter and a Scotch Ale. This beer has a rich mouth feel and a body of complex intensity. Upfront, there are notes of coffee and chocolate beautifully accentuated by the aroma of blueberries. The finish features a delicate balance of sweet fruit and dry hops.
