Redhook: ‘Getting Married Is So Gay’

The Redhook Brewery certainly pushed some buttons last year when it launched a rather crude ad campaign littered with frat-boy humor.

Now, Redhook has gone political in its latest ad campaign in support of same-sex marriage. The company is calling it their “So Gay” campaign and they hope to influence voter opinion on the issue of gay marriage.

Below is a press release with more details on the campaign from the company’s Seattle-based ad agency, Frank Unlimited

SEATTLE —Prior to Election Day, in Washington State, craft beer Redhook has adapted its ongoing, “He’s Redhook” advertising to take a stand pro same-sex marriage, on the state’s Referendum 74. The work is by advertising agency Frank Unlimited, Seattle.

The long-running campaign has offered “Redhook’s”?wiseguy opinions—as if Redhook were a person—and now has him saying, “Getting married is so gay. It’s about time.” Beneath that, text goes on record: “Redhook supports equality on November 6.”

Previous opinions have all been apolitical, e.g. “Redhook predicts they’ll move the fences in [at Safeco Field] next year,” or, on a roadside construction site billboard, “Redhook is betting the over on this tunnel project.” The “So Gay”?ad runs online, on news and sports sites, geo-targeted to Washington.
