DryHop Brewers Releases Take Me To Your Lemur for Charity

Chicago, IL – Lincoln Park Zoo and DryHop Brewers are partnering on the release of a new beer to raise money for the Crowned Lemur Wish List Fund. This is the second consecutive year that the zoo and DryHop are collaborating on a beer;  in 2014, a Red Saison was brewed to support the Red Panda Wish List Fund.

On Saturday, May 9, “Take Me To Your Lemur,” a 5.5% Cantaloupe & Clementine Wit, will be exclusively released at Zoo-ologie: Macaque Masquerade, the Auxiliary Board of Lincoln Park Zoo’s annual signature fundraiser. DryHop Brewers Executive Chef Joel Pillar will also serve a Housemade Shrimp Roll to pair with the Wit that’s only available the night of Zoo-ologie. The beer will then be released at DryHop (3155 N. Broadway) on Wednesday, May 13 at 6 p.m. For each pint of “Take Me To Your Lemur” sold, DryHop will donate a dollar to the Crowned Lemur Wish List Fund. More details can be found here.

This year, Lincoln Park Zoo and DryHop Brewers’ collaboration beer is inspired by ingredients from the crowned lemur’s diet and will help purchase essential enrichment items, including foraging feeders, hammocks, and boomer balls, which all help keep the lemurs engaged, active, and healthy on a daily basis.

According to Lincoln Park Zoo’s Curator of Primates Maureen Leahy, “Lemurs are not as destructive as some other primate species, so enrichment items purchased with DryHop’s generous donation to the Wish List Fund should last for many years. For instance, the hammocks last for several years with our gorillas who can weigh up to 400 lbs., so in theory they could last a lifetime with our 4 lb. lemurs.”

The crowned lemur is vulnerable in its native habitat, due to logging, burning and grazing, which fragment their habitat, isolate populations, and disrupt traveling patterns. Lincoln Park Zoo cooperatively manages crowned lemur populations with other institutions in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This small lemur species is named for the crown-shaped, orange pattern of fur above its brow. The genders have distinctly different coloration; males are chestnut-brown overall while females are gray.

“We’re very excited to partner with Lincoln Park Zoo for the second year in a row and raise funds to help the zoo’s crowned lemurs – Tucker, Sokkwi, and their one-year-old female, Sava as well as older brother Azizi. Inspired by their diet, this traditional Belgian Wit is brewed with clementine peel and cantaloupe to add to the complexity of the brew. Added to the fermentation, the cantaloupe and orange peel impart their flavor and aroma. The brew is rounded out with melon notes with the use of Hull Melon hops,” said DryHop Brewers Head Brewer Brant Dubovick.

“Lincoln Park Zoo is thrilled to again partner with DryHop in such a unique and delicious way,” said Eric Alvarez, Manager of Corporate Alliances at Lincoln Park Zoo. “Having DryHop commit funds and support to the animals in our care is both encouraging and humbling and to be able to share that with the beer-lovers of Chicago is exceptional.”

“Take Me To Your Lemur” will only be available while it lasts at Zoo-ologie on Saturday, May 9, and at DryHop Brewers, starting Wednesday, May 13 at 6 p.m. Cheers!
