Industry headwinds, brewery acquisitions, the emerging cannabis sector, and the seemingly never ending battle between big and small beer makers were the focus of Brewbound’s most-read stories of 2018.

Add Tallgrass Brewing to the list of small, regional beer companies struggling to stay afloat amid competition from more than 6,600 craft breweries. The Manhattan, Kansas-based brewery, the largest in the state, has suspended operations and laid off approximately 20 employees, founder Jeff Gill confirmed to Brewbound.

After a decade in business, Kansas’ largest independent craft brewery has found itself squeezed between national brands and taproom-room focused microbreweries — both of which are chipping away at the company’s local market share at a time when the industry has grown hypercompetitive (more than 5,600 U.S. brewing companies are now in operation across the U.S.).

Tallgrass Brewing Company announces its brand release calendar for 2017, which includes new additions to its year-round portfolio, seasonal offerings and Explorer Series lineup of “occasional” specialty beers, plus a a few extra releases that will see limited distribution in its 18-state region. Brands are listed below in order of shipment schedule.

8-Bit Pale Ale is the latest release from Tallgrass Brewing Company and the brewery’s first infused offering. 8-Bit is a traditional American Pale Ale that is “hop-rocketed” using Australian Galaxy Hops at the end of the brewing cycle, giving the beer a massive dose of hops flavor.
